Rakshasa

Small iconography

Rakshasa is the hindu term for demon. The Balinese make sacrifices, attempt to pacify, and pray to these demons, just as to other gods. Sculptures and reliefs of rakshasas often adorn the entrances to temples and bridges. Armed with a club, long teeth and moustache, they are said to ward off evil – for only a demon can keep demons at bay and protect the holy precinct.

For this sculpture, superior quality Mineros® sandstone has been used, rather than volcanic stone, making it suitable for outside use in our climate.
